Selva Nivashini pulls off upset

Kung Fu Style
After chalking up a total of 1,019-pinfall over six games, she registered a respectable 181-pinfall in the stepladder first match and edged two other contenders – Puah Bee Kuan (142) and Nur Balqis Rusli (124) – for a showdown against Sharifah Marissa.
Earlier, Sharifah Marissa had taken the top spot in the girls' Under-15 with a combined score of 1,089-pinfall over six games.
Selva Nivashini turned the tables on the leader with a more composed display and upstaged Sharifah Marissa 166-133, 176-149 in the stepladder final.
A total of 104 junior bowlers took part in the four categories – girls' Under-12, boys' Under-12, girls' Under-15 and boys' Under-15.
The top eight in each category were rewarded with prize money, while the champion in each category also received a ball.
“We are offering the prizes as a form of incentive to spur the junior bowlers to do well in the tournament. As we are also operating a tuition centre (Bintang Ceria) for primary school pupils and secondary school students, we want to encourage the youngsters to excel in both studies and sports,” said Darshakar Trading Sdn Bhd director Muhammad Shakir Othman.
However, the grand prize of RM1,000 for a perfect game as well as the Hi-Game for Under-12 (RM100) and Under-15 (RM100) eluded the participants.
The Hi-Game benchmarks for the Under-12 and Under-15 categories are 230-pinfall and 260-pinfall respectively.
Mohd Aziem Azemi, who won the boys' Under-15, came closest to the mark with his 246-pinfall effort.
Meanwhile, Victoria Chin and Mohd Aizudeen Mustaqim triumphed in the girls' and boys' Under-12 categories respectively.
“It was just an average performance from him. Although he recorded a poor 136-pinfall in the fifth game, he survived. Usually, he will bowl a bad game over six games. He needs to work on delivering consistent results over six games,” said Aizudeen's mother Nor Azlina Abd Samad, adding that his best of 205-pinfall in the sixth game was far from his 266-pinfall personal best.
Following the first Bintang Ceria Youth Cup held in March, the tuition centre will be hosting its open tournament, scheduled for October.

“The categories for the tournament are men's open, women's open, girls' Under-12, boys' Under-12, girls' Under-15 and boys' Under-15. We are still working on the details to offer attractive prizes to the participants. In addition, we will also be selecting about 20 bud- ding bowlers in the Under-12 and Under-15 categories to join our junior team. We will nurture their potential with proper training,” added Muhammad Shakir.
